Understanding Road Signs: A Guide for Learner Drivers

Road signs are crucial for safe driving, and Newcastle’s diverse road network features many different types. As your driving instructor, I’ll help you understand the most important signs you’ll encounter during your lessons and test.

Regulatory Signs

These are the most important signs to recognize, particularly around Newcastle city centre. The circular red-bordered signs are prohibitive – like the no entry signs on John Dobson Street’s bus lane, or the speed limits along the Coast Road. Remember, a red circle means ‘must not’ – these are mandatory restrictions.

Warning Signs

Triangle-shaped signs with red borders warn you about upcoming hazards. You’ll see these frequently around Newcastle’s school zones, particularly in Gosforth and Jesmond. The steep hill warnings on roads like Westgate Road are crucial for managing our electric vehicle’s regenerative braking system.

Information Signs

Rectangle-shaped blue signs provide important information. These are prevalent around the Tyne Bridge and Central Motorway, indicating lanes and directions. Pay special attention to the electric vehicle charging point signs, which are increasingly common around Newcastle.

Direction Signs

Green signs on major roads and blue signs in urban areas help with navigation. Understanding these is crucial during your test’s independent driving section, especially around complex junctions like Four Lane Ends or the Cowgate roundabout.

Box Junctions

Yellow box junctions are common in Newcastle’s busy intersections. These require special attention, particularly around the Swan House roundabout and approaching the Tyne Bridge. Remember, you must not enter unless your exit is clear.

Temporary Signs

Newcastle’s ongoing development means you’ll often encounter temporary signs. These are usually yellow and indicate roadworks or lane changes. Stay alert for these around Pilgrim Street and other areas undergoing regeneration.

Electric Vehicle Specific Signs

As an EV learner, you’ll need to recognize charging point signs and parking restrictions. Newcastle’s growing network of charging stations is well-signed, but understanding these symbols is essential for future independent driving.
